Before the first synthetic hair color was invented in 1907 by French chemist Eugene Schueller, women around the world have been using herbs and plants to enhance the color of their hair. By using a simple steeping process, a hair dye tea can be made. Boiling specific roots, leaves and herbs can lighten, darken and enhance natural hair color.
How to make a basic hair color rinse or tea
1.) Place about 1/2 -1 cup roots, herbs or flowers in a teabag or tea ball before adding to 3-4 cups water. Or follow the hair color recipe for correct proportions.

2.) Boil in water for at least 20 minutes. The longer you allow the herbs to boil, the stronger the hair dye rinse will become. Allow to cool. Drain the herbs.

3.) Apply as a final rinse, after you shampoo and condition.

4.) You can also add a few drops of essential oils to help ail scalp problems or carrier oils for added conditioning of your hair.

For a stronger hair color, place herbs in a glass jar. Pour boiling water over herbs, cover and let sit in jar for anywhere between 24 hours to a week.
